How To Make Buttermilk and Buttermilk Substitute

If you want to make REAL buttermilk it is really easy and you get butter while making it too! If you want to make the substitute, skip ahead a little.

Real Butter/ Buttermilk:

 1 container heavy whipping cream

Get out your stand or hand mixer and mix up the whipping cream. It will turn to familiar whipped cream but after that it will begin to separate. Keep whipping it. The liquid that comes out is buttermilk. Drain it off and use it in your recipes. Left in the bowl is the butter. Work it with your hands to get out all the liquid. You can salt it if you like. Use it right away or wrap up and put in the fridge.

Buttermilk Substitute:

This one is super easy and comes in handy a lot! I never have buttermilk on hand as I don't use it enough to go through it. Every so often it comes up in a recipe though and I need to mix some up quick.

Real buttermilk is the leftover, slightly sour liquid left over from making butter. It is thicker than milk but thinner than cream. It is a process to make the real thing but this substitute only takes 5 minutes and can be used in place of buttermilk in any recipe.

Pour 1 Cup of milk into a bowl
Add 1 Tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice

Stir up the mixture and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Then use in any recipe that calls for buttermilk.
