Regrow Green Onions/ Shallots

When you buy green onions/shallot from the grocery store they still have the roots intact. Use all the onion you need and leave about an inch above the roots. Place the green onion in a container with a little bit of water (enough to cover the roots) and change out the water every day.

You will be amazed at how quickly they grow back!! By the next morning you will be able to see the new leaves shooting up already. I plan to put a lot in my garden this year. I will just snip off the portion I need and leave the bottom in the soil to grow away and make me a new one!

This is such a great frugal tip. It will save you money on produce as well as on your garden. They are cheaper to buy from the grocery store than as seeds and they are already strong and healthy plants! I spent the extra couple cents and got the organic ones because I will be putting them in my garden.

I hope you enjoy this tip! If there are any other interesting tips like this you know, please feel free to post!

  1. I have moved these from the jar and planted them in my garden yesterday. They had great roots growing already and it rained all day yesterday and today so I am confident they will root and grow! From now on, I will only cut the tops off and leave the rest in the ground to continue growing.

  3. You are absolutely right! So simple that most people dont bother! I let my onions grow all summer in the garden only trimming off the tops as I needed them. In the fall I harvested most of them as onions but put about a half dozen into a pot and brought them back into the kitchen for the winter.
That's right! Im still using the same green onions 1 year later!!

  4. Don't forget about leeks... they grow wonderfully as well. I just put them in potting soil instead of water and put them outside when I can and leave them inside when I can't. I grow in planters. I do lettuce the same way. No water changing involved! Just water when the soil looks or feels like it needs it.
