Rainy Summer

Last year it felt like the driest summer ever in Niagara. My garden was so dry that the plants that would have been my fall harvest were crunchy to the touch. The soil blew away in the convection-oven breeze. This summer, not so much!

This summer I have seen more rain and some of the best thunderstorms than I have in years. And I LOVE thunderstorms. And you know who else loves the rain?!? My chickens! It brings all the best bugs up to the surface.

I had always expected the chickens to take shelter in the heavy rain but instead I found them out, braving the thunder and lightning, chasing bugs as they floated by downstream to the ditches. I've never seen a flock of chickens so happy as when the rain is falling. But boy do they ever get dirty! Its not enough to be out in the rain, one must roll around in the new mud puddles, splashing away. Perhaps they learned this part from me, as I was knee-deep in the water getting pictures and videos of the flooding.

I love to sit out on the porch with a blanket over my lap and watch the storm roll in. I've been doing it exactly the same since I was a child. How do you watch the storm come in? Do you sit outside or bundle up indoors?
